What Masonry Work Do Market Buildings Need?
Masonry is the heart of this district’s building stock. Former meat market buildings and warehouses stand on load bearing brick and stone, often with iron or steel at their openings. Over many decades, weather and alterations leave cracked lintels, bulging brick and parapets that need rebuilding.
Most of the neighborhood is shops, restaurants, offices and hotels, with few residences. That means the masonry we deal with is largely commercial, tall and visible from the street.
- Parapets that lean or have lost coping stones
- Cracked or rusting lintels over wide openings
- Bulging brick above old openings that were cut in
- Spalled brick faces on lower walls
- Failing masonry walls of vaults beneath the sidewalk
- Stone sills and thresholds worn through
Hotels and newer buildings mix with the old stock, and the difference between old and new masonry affects how we repair each one. We read the construction before we choose a method.

How We Fix It
How Do You Repair Masonry on a Landmark Block?
We start by reading the wall: its bond, its movement and the material in it. Then we choose the lightest repair that will last. That might be resetting loose brick, rebuilding a parapet section or replacing a lintel, always with materials that suit the original construction.
Some jobs are plain. A section of parapet is taken down, rebuilt with sound brick and capped. Others take more thought, such as a lintel that has rusted and pushed the brick above it out of line.
Vault walls beneath the sidewalk are a special case. These walls support the paving above, so a repair to them has to hold loads from foot traffic and deliveries. We assess them and tell you if a structural engineer should be part of the plan.
We protect the sidewalk and pedestrians below during any high work, and we explain the setup before it begins.
Which Approvals Apply to Masonry in This District?
Parts of the Meatpacking District lie within the Gansevoort Market Historic District, so the Landmarks Preservation Commission may review exterior changes. Structural masonry, parapets and facade repair can require Department of Buildings permits. The city can tell you which of these apply to a given building.
Buildings taller than six stories sit under Local Law 11 and its periodic facade inspections, and most of the repairs those reports demand are masonry. If your building is covered, we can carry out the repairs listed in the report.
Structural problems may need a licensed engineer. We do not promise outcomes on a failing wall, but we can build to an engineer’s plan and tell you when your wall needs one.
Work that disturbs the sidewalk may require a DOT permit, and owners must keep the sidewalk in repair. For notices and basics, see sidewalk violations.
