Do Driveways Exist in the Meatpacking District?
Not in the usual sense. This is a district of former market buildings, shops, restaurants and hotels, with almost no houses. What it does have are vehicle entrances: garage doors, loading bays and service lanes where trucks and cars cross the sidewalk. That is the concrete we repair.
A vehicle entrance has the same weak points as a driveway. The slab takes concentrated weight, the apron over the sidewalk is thinner than a road surface, and the curb edge gets struck by tires and truck bumpers.
- Cracked or crumbling curb cut aprons
- Garage door thresholds where the slab has broken away
- Sunken pads at loading bays
- Chipped curb edges struck by turning trucks
- Worn ramps that have become slick
- Seams where old patches have lifted
Low lying blocks near the Hudson can hold water in a dip at the threshold. If rain pools just inside a garage door, the pitch of the slab is usually part of the answer.

How We Fix It
How Is a Vehicle Entrance Rebuilt?
We cut out the failed concrete, check the base and any structure below it, then pour a new slab with steel reinforcement sized to the traffic. The apron over the sidewalk is shaped to meet the street and the garage floor smoothly, without a lip that scrapes bumpers.
Because the apron lies across public ground, the sidewalk portion needs a DOT permit, and we file it. Altering a curb cut or ramp can also bring in the Department of Buildings, so we tell you before pouring if that looks likely.
Raised loading platforms need extra thought. We match the new slab height to the platform edge so a hand truck can roll from one to the other.
If a vault sits beneath the entrance, we find out how it is built before we load it with new concrete.
What Do Owners Need to Know About Aprons and Landmark Review?
Part of the district lies inside the Gansevoort Market Historic District, so Landmarks Preservation Commission approval may apply to visible changes. Simple concrete repair is different from changing how an entrance looks. Confirm current rules with the city, and we will help you ask the right questions.
A broken apron can end up in a sidewalk violation, since it sits in the public walkway. The owner is expected to keep the sidewalk next to the property in repair. See how sidewalk violations work if you have a notice in hand.
We do not say who is responsible for curbs. That question depends on the facts, and the city is the right place to confirm it.
When work is entirely inside your garage or loading area, the DOT sidewalk permit does not apply, though structural work and ramps can still involve the Department of Buildings.

FAQ
Meatpacking District Entrance Questions
We repair what exists: garage entrances, loading areas and aprons. The concrete work is the same, and the traffic is often heavier than on a house driveway.
Altering a curb cut can involve city approval, including the Department of Buildings. Ask before you change one.
We pour in stages where possible and schedule around your operations. Some curing time is unavoidable.
Truck tires strike the edge repeatedly, and salt and water work into the cracks. New concrete with a firm edge resists both.
We do. Phone (718) 468-8803 and tell us which entrance needs work.
